The 1000 Islands Run 2017 Charity Recipients were –
- Wellness Center at River Hospital
- Clayton Volunteer Fire Department
- Alex Bay Volunteer Fire Department
- Clayton Food Pantry
- Clayton Youth Commission
Our primary recipient in 2017 was the River Community Wellness Program at River Hospital in the 1000 Islands. The Wellness Center offers a service that treats active military and veterans who deal with PTSD and TBI. It’s an expanding program with fantastic successes.
It has been reported that 1 out of 3 Verterans suffer from some form of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and/or traumatic brain injury (TBI). However these conditions are not always able to seen, but the effects of post-traumatic stress are very real. In fact, they can be even more dangerous than the wounds you can see. Did you know that 50% of people with PTSD do not seek treatment, and out of the half that do seek treatment, only half of them get “minimally or adequate” treatment.
Recent studies show that the cost of treating a typical patient with P.T.S.D. during the first year averages $8,300, someone with T.B.I. $11,700, and someone with both is $13,800. The River Hospital’s Veterans’ PTS Program understand that the trauma experienced by Veterans has caused them to view the world as a bleak and unsafe place. The staff at River Hospital go above and beyond to help Veterans feel safe and secure as they begin your journey of healing. However the costs for this service are increasing every year. This is why the 1000 Islands Charity Poker Run Corp. will be donating 50% of the money raised from this event to help the Veterans with the financial assistance they need after serving our country. All money donated is earmarked specifically for the Wellness Program.
